Fukuyama Medical Center is the only facility certified by the Japanese Society of Pediatric Surgeons eastern Hiroshima, and there are only three such certified facilities in the entire prefecture. As a core hospital for eastern Hiroshima and western Okayama, our staff, who consist of one medical adviser, two specialists and one or two medical interns, take care of patients from throughout the region. Pediatric surgery treats gastrointestinal organs, respiratory tract, urogenital organs and malignant tumors in patients ranging from newborns to children up to 15 years old. Some of the major diseases we treat include inguinal hernia (hernia), exomphalos (protruding navel), cryptorchidism, appendicitis, pyloric stenosis, intussusception and so on. Endoscopic surgery is possible for patients who weigh at least 6 kg. In obstetrics, increasing numbers of neonatal surgical diseases are detected by the fetal ultrasonography before birth. In such cases, we decide the method and timing of maternal transport and delivery, and provide medical care as a team. We perform examinations such as esophagus, stomach, large intestine and bronchial endoscopy, esophageal PH monitoring, and esophagus and anal pressure testing. For patients such as severely handicapped children who have have gastroesophageal reflux or difficulty in swallowing, we perform gastrostomy and cardioplasty in the Endoscopy Center. For vesicoureteral reflux and hydronephrosis, which tend to cause recurring urinary tract infections, we perform procedures such as collagen injection or surgery in collaboration with the Urology Department. We perform surgery for biliary dilatation and biliary atresia, but for cases which require liver transplant, we refer the surgery to other medical facilities, and provide ongoing postoperative care.
