Respiratory Surgery

About us

The Respiratory Surgery Department is staffed by two specialist respiratory surgeons and a junior doctor who aims to achieve specialist status. This department performs about 100 cases of surgery with general anesthesia per year, of which the most common operation is lung cancer surgery. We have implemented fully endoscopic lung cancer surgery utilizing the latest hi-vision cameras. Through this method, we achieve minimally invasive surgeries which are gentle to the patient’s body and leave only small scars. However, in any surgery, our top priorities are to guarantee safety of the patient while providing a complete cure of the illness. So, when endoscopic surgery is deemed to pose a risk, we occasionally perform conventional open chest surgery. We conduct clinical care in the same ward as the respiratory medicine department, and perform multidisciplinary therapy for lung cancer in cooperation with the radiotherapy and radiation diagnosis departments. In addition to lung cancer, we treat a wide range of respiratory diseases such as spontaneous pneumothorax and mediastinal tumors. Outpatient consultations are offered on Mondays (both Dr. Takahashi and Dr. Okutani), Tuesdays (Dr. Takahashi) and Thursdays (Dr. Okutani). We conscientiously strive to provide treatment ideally suited to each individual patient, so please feel free to consult with us.
