The Gastroenterology Department conducts examination and treatment of disease of the gastrointestinal tract, such as the esophagus, stomach, small intestine and large intestine. We also treat diseases of the gallbladder and pancreas, which are connected to the gastrointestinal tract.
We diagnose and treat a wide scope of diseases, from cancers (malignant tumors) of various internal organs to benign diseases such as stomach ulcers, duodenal ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis) and cholelithiasis.
We treat patients with general abdominal symptoms, such as difficulty swallowing, heartburn, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and the like.
We carry out diagnosis via appropriate and thorough testing chosen from methods including blood testing, X-ray examination, abdominal ultrasonography, abdominal CT examination, endoscopy (capsule endoscopes, specialized small intestine endoscopes, and “ultrasonic endoscopes” which are fitted with ultrasonic equipment on their tips).
When deciding a treatment policy, we carefully consult with patients and their families to establish a care plan which satisfies both the patient and medical staff.
Fukuyama Medical Center makes particular efforts to implement minimally-invasive treatment, which creates less stress upon the patient’s body.
Some polypoid tumor and malignant tumors can be removed endoscopically. It is also possible to remove lithiasis by endoscopic treatment.
Other treatments performed via endoscope include installation of metallic stents into narrowed sections of the gastrointestinal tract or bile duct, balloon dilatation, and treatment of the esophageal varix. When endoscopic treatments offer the same or better effectiveness, it is natural that we recommend the method which creates less stress on the body.
Fukuyama Medical Center is a member of the National Hospital Organization, and the Gastroenterology Department takes an active role in conducting clinical trials to evaluate the effectiveness of new medicines and treatments. This offers patients the benefits of the latest medicines and treatment methods, and, at the same time, know that they are contributing to the development of medical care. Of course, we never force patients to participate, however, we always appreciate the consideration and cooperation of interested patients. Fukuyama Medical Center is committed to providing medical care suited to each individual patient, which is thoroughly explained and carefully administered. “Patient-centred” is our primary philosophy, and we strive to provide state-of-the-art medical care, including painless treatments.
